Velvet’s Litter Five Weeks Tomorrow.

Changed my mind about my baby boy sleeping in my bed. Yes…he can sleep in the bed with me …while he is little. He is used to sleeping with his litter mates and mom. Don’t want him to get lonely and then I have a small round dog bed for him when he is ready for his next step. I purchased the suggested crate for daytime and have “the girls” coming over in 2 hour intrevals. He will be in his crate for 2 hrs then at their house with “the girls” for 2 hrs then back in his crate for 2 hrs and alternating again. Counting the weeks and racking up the supplies.

Your baby can sleep wherever you want. Just remember that he is a baby for awhile and could have an accident…

Can he be in his crate all night, close to me, when I first bring him home? Wouldn’t this be too much time in a crate? Or would it be best to sleep on the floor with him and place a plastic padding under our blanket.

Oh they are getting so big! As long as the crate was in our room, our previous dog was very happy in her crate as a puppy. Later on she decided she needed to be on the bed with us, though. The crate is like their den/ safe place. It really isn’t a negative thing.

My Dante was in a crate at night in the beginning and he told me when he needed to go out. He made it into my bed at three months and won because he slept through the night :) He never had an accident in the bed b/c he knew when to wake me up with a whine or a paw in the face!

Do Velvet’s babies all have homes promised?

Hi Lauren, yes they are all spoken for. But if you know someone looking for a puppy still have them call me as I know what is coming up for me and other breeders…

The idea for crate training is first leave the puppy in no longer than they can hold it. Many can go through the night but some cannot and will get anxious and hopefully wake you up to get out. That is one reason to have the crate near where you sleep – you can hear them move around and can tell if just rearranging themselves or need to go outside. For many puppies this helps teach them to hold it for as long as they can rather then squirt in th crate. But I will say, I’ve had a coupld who wee’wee’d in the crate for a bit before stopping. Other reasons for crate training are to have a place in you home that you can safely keep your puppy when you cannot keep an eye on them. When you are cooking, or doing other things, you can put the puppy in the crate with a treat or toy. Or you can just put the puppy in there when time for a nap. It is used for the puppy’s protection as much as for training. Unless you puppy-proof your house super-well, there are too many things they can hurt themselves with — wires, socks (can kill if stay in their tummy), medications (which with a dog in the house should NEVER be left out), food on the counters, etc. Some dogs never outgrow chewing things — I have one — Velvet who will find something even if it is a pillow or the corner or the woodwork to chew if I do not crate her when I leave the house. Yet she sleeps on my med or in my room at night without bothering anything. — so during the day is the issue — she must not be tired. -lol… But again- I crate her so I do not come home to a problem and be mad at her — Do not set them up for failure so if you know your dog does stuff – do not continue to give then the opportunity because then it is only your own fault — again anther time a crate comes in handly — Wehn you leave the house, your puppy ought to willingly go into the crate for safe-keeping. So, it is not just about sleeping at night or house training. I keep all my dogs crate-trained so even after coming home from getting their championships, they will go right into a crate if I need or want them to for any reason. Works great.
